Kathmandu, Nepal (Feb. 23, 2026) — At least 19 people were killed and 25 others injured after a passenger bus traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu veered off the Prithvi Highway and plunged down a steep mountainside into the Trishuli River in Dhading District on Monday.
According to authorities, the bus lost control while navigating a winding section of the highway before falling several meters into the river below. Rescue teams, including local residents and security personnel, rushed to the scene shortly after the accident. Emergency responders worked for hours to pull survivors from the wreckage and recover the bodies of victims.
The injured passengers, some of whom are reported to be foreign nationals, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several remain in critical condition.
Officials from Nepal have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that poor road conditions or possible mechanical failure may have contributed, though authorities have not confirmed the exact reason.
Road accidents are frequent along Nepal’s mountainous highways, particularly on routes connecting major cities such as Pokhara and Kathmandu, where narrow roads and sharp turns pose significant risks to drivers.
Further details, including the identities of the victims, are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
